Michael Floyd

Helping Australian businesses attract, engage and develop great people - Executive Recruitment, Leadership & Talent Consulting
Managing Director, Carrera & Obsidian Leaders
Executive Coach, Advisory Board Member

Michael Floyd has spent more than two decades working at the intersection of talent, leadership, and business performance — not as an observer, but as a practitioner who has lived the challenges his clients face.

In 2002, Michael founded Carrera on a simple but demanding premise: that finding the right person for a critical role requires genuine insight into both the business and the individual. Having worked inside the industries he recruits for, Michael understood what exceptional commercial talent looked like from the inside — and what it cost an organisation, in time, momentum and culture, when the fit was wrong. That conviction shaped a founder-led firm built on depth of relationship rather than volume of transactions, with client partnerships that routinely span two decades.

Over time, Michael's work evolved naturally beyond search. He recognised that placing the right person is only the beginning — what determines whether that investment pays off is what happens next. This realisation led him deeper into leadership development, executive coaching and organisational consulting; work he describes as the most meaningful of his career.

As a coach and facilitator, Michael works with leaders across the spectrum — from emerging managers stepping into their first senior roles to seasoned executives navigating complex organisational challenges. He is known for his capacity to help leaders see potential in themselves they hadn't yet recognised, and for his ability to unlock the collective capability of leadership teams. His board experience across commercial enterprises gives him a strategic lens that grounds his development work in business reality, not theory.

Michael brings this same philosophy to Obsidian Leaders. The program reflects everything he has learned about what separates leaders who grow from those who plateau: self-awareness, authentic connection, emotional intelligence, and the discipline to keep developing — even at the top.

Outside of work, Michael is a committed community contributor, a busy dad, and a competitive tennis player who applies the same intensity on court that he brings to the boardroom.
